Most companies hire based on skills or experience. At Labor Solutions, we believe it may be better to change it up and hire someone based on their talent and passion for the job because if they love what they do, they’ll be good at it.

The only downfall is that hiring someone based on their talent isn’t easy, so we’ve put together some steps to help you out.

  1. Treat the talent as a skill
Mapping out the specific talents along with the skills and experiences needed is the first step to success.
  2. Identify the talent you need based on what needs to be done.
List the work and the results that you need from the work. This will help you get the performance you are looking for.
  3. Make sure everyone involved in the hiring process understands what you are looking for.
First, talk to the person hiring for the job plus a couple of people who are currently doing the job or have done the job in the past. Then, make sure your job posting clearly describes what talents are most important.
  4. Turn your “talent words” into descriptions of behavior.
Be sure to give an example of how the talent listed will be used. Such as an actual occurrence that may happen, so that applicants can know if they best fit.
  5. Use behavioral interviews to find the candidate who has the talents you need.
During the interview, ask a question about how they would act in a certain situation and see if their answer shows the talent you are looking for.
  6. Once you find the candidate you think best fits what you are looking for, you have officially hired based on talent.
