A good resume can be the difference between getting a job and not even getting an interview. Here are important things to make sure to include in your resume.

Writing a resume can be intimidating. There are many resources to help you write a professional looking resume. Still, what you include is at least as important as how it looks. At Labor Solutions, Inc., we want to see great people get great jobs. So, here are the items we have found to be the most important to include on your resume.

10 Things You Should Include on Your Resume

  1. Numbers: Talk about your past successes in numbers that might resonate with the employer.
  2. Relevant information: You may think all information is relevant, but the employer may not care about your first-place trophy in the local BBQ competition.
  3. Active words: Talk about what you “completed,” “accomplished,” or “led.” Such words speak of action. Don’t add them just to add them, but if they are relevant, include them.
  4. Achievements: Explain your successes without bragging too much.
  5. Job specific information: Consider tweaking your resume to better fit the specific position. Don’t falsify, but if some information is more  appropriate, include it.
  6. Professional email address: Using email services is fine, but what comes before the “@” needs to appear professional. “betty.jones@…” is much better than “bettylovesquilts@…”
  7. Updated contact information: This is simple but also easy to overlook. if the employer can’t contact you, they can’t hire you.
  8. Strategic accents: Use bold, caps, or italics to bring attention to important information you want to be sure the employer sees. But, use this technique sparingly. If everything is bold, nothing stands out.
  9. 10-15 years of work experience: Including 10 years of work experience is standard. If you have relevant work experience beyond that, include up to 15 years. Remember somebody has to read this and the job you held 30 years ago probably doesn’t have much bearing on this position.
  10. Links: If you have a professional website or blog, include that. You may also want to include links to your social media profiles. Many employers are going to check it anyway. Make it easier for them.
