The things you leave off your resume can be just as important as the things you include.

At Labor Solutions, Inc. we know that many industries are competitive. Your resume can be the difference between getting the job, or it going to someone else. We’re passionate about connecting the right people with the right companies and positions.  So, here are 10 things NOT to include when writing your resume.

What to Leave Off Your Resume

  1. Irrelevant information: Remember, someone has to read it. Leave out anything that is not relevant to the position for which you are applying.
  2. Wrong fonts: A font that is too small or too large can be hard to read. Use 10- or 12- point font for best readability.
  3. Ancient history: Covering the past 10 years of experience is standard. If relevant go up to 15. However, leave off anything older than that.
  4. Fluff: It can be tempting to add everything you have ever done or accomplished. While this may make you an interesting person, it doesn’t belong here.
  5. Jargon: Many industries have their own language. The person doing the hiring may not be familiar with those special words. Speak in layman’s terms whenever possible.
  6. Lies: Be honest. If you’re really good at something, include it. However, don’t claim to be an expert in something you have only a passing knowledge of.
  7. Catchphrases: Phrases such as “best of breed” or “go-getter” may sound impressive but sadly, they get overused in resumes. Leave them out.
  8. Errors: Errors in your resume are a red flag for employers. Beyond spellcheck, use a grammar-checking program as well. There are a number of good ones on the internet, often for free.
  9. Politics: While your work with certain social issues may tell of your work ethic and community involvement, they are often hot button topics. If your political views differ from those of the person reading your resume, it could be detrimental.
  10. Reference: It isn’t necessary to include references on your resume. You also don’t have to include “references available upon request.” Hiring managers will assume you have references and, if interested, will assume they can ask for them.
