At this time of year, we pause to recognize some important issues.

October is an important month. For one thing, it means the holidays are just around the corner, which is always exciting. More importantly, October is the time of year that we raise awareness for some very important issues. October is recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, as well as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Labor Solutions takes the health and well-being of all our employees and workers seriously, and we want you to know that we care about our community.

Take a Stand for Health and Well-Being
No one wants to hear the dreaded “C” word during their annual physical. Unfortunately, sometimes it happens. The good news is that since 1989, breast cancer deaths have declined 40 percent among women. It is believed that this is due to improvements in early detection. In most cases, breast cancer is treatable and survivable if it is caught in time.

While breast cancer primarily strikes women, it should be noted that men can also be affected by the disease. Women are encouraged to receive a yearly mammogram from the age of 40 on, but anyone – male or female – who notices an unusual lump or pain in their breast tissue should make an appointment with their doctor to have it checked.

Domestic violence is another issue that is often associated with women, but men can be victims, too. So can children. Domestic violence doesn’t always mean physical assault, either. It can include intimidation, sexual assault, interfering with medical care, and other forms of abuse. This behavior is never okay. If you or someone you know is being abused, it is imperative that you speak out. It could save a life.
