At Labor Solutions, we’re realistic. We understand that employees aren’t always fully committed to a position or an employer, and that looking for a different job while employed is pretty common. There are still some basic protocols that should be followed if you’re looking for work while working.

Be Professional

Honestly, looking for a job while you already have one is not a bad idea. You still have income coming in, and you are in regular contact with your industry network. As long as your job search doesn’t compromise your current work, there’s no real reason not to look.  Labor Solutions fully supports advancing your career this way.

However, there are some pitfalls here. Many employed job seekers would prefer that their current boss not know about their search. While it may seem inconsequential, some employers may take your shopping for a new job as an indication that you are dissatisfied with your current role. Even worse, there are supervisors who will take it personally if you look elsewhere and may react by drastically cutting your hours or assigning you to the most reviled tasks on the jobsite. It isn’t ethical or professional to do this, but it does happen.

If you decide to go ahead with a job search while employed, do so responsibly and professionally. Maintain the same level of commitment to your current role that you have always done, and keep your business to yourself. Don’t confide in coworkers that you have an interview elsewhere, and don’t use current coworkers as references. Let a prospective employer know that your job search should be kept confidential, and don’t speak ill of your current employer to any potential employer.
