At Labor Solutions, we aren’t in the business of offering healthcare tips, but we do recognize the importance of reducing the stigma of discussing mental health issues. World Mental Health Day is October 10. Many of us spend a large portion of our time on the job or preparing for work, so it’s time for us to talk about the connections between our professional life and our mental health.

Fostering a Healthy Work Environment

Work-related stress can cause a bevy of health issues, including anxiety, depression, problems within the family or other relationships, substance abuse, and more. It doesn’t have to be this way, and learning effective strategies for promoting a healthy atmosphere at work can greatly reduce stress-related problems.

The first step that we can all take, as employers and as workers, is to normalize conversations about mental health issues. When people feel that mentioning an emotional or mental health problem is taboo then it becomes easy for the problem to become overwhelming. Sometimes just knowing that you’re not alone in your struggles is a huge relief.

Employers can set the stage for encouraging workers to be proactive about caring for their mental health by implementing programs that provide resources for employees to get help when they need it. Providing supervisors and managers with suitable mental health training can equip them with the skills to recognize and respond to warning signs in an appropriate manner, as well as how to identify and resolve workplace issues before they develop into crisis situations.

At Labor Solutions, we value all of the people we work with, and we believe that when we look out for each with more compassion and less judgment, then we all have a greater chance to thrive.
