Teenagers might think it’s cool to have a “bad reputation,” but working adults should know better! Here at Labor Solutions, we’re not opposed to people having fun during their off time, but it’s important to cultivate a good reputation when it comes to work.

Be Known for the Right Reasons

We’ve all known people whose reputation preceded them, for better or worse. Don’t let what people hear about you ruin opportunities for career advancement – make sure they hear great things about you! Labor Solutions has some tips for making this happen.

  1. Earn respect. If you want to be respected at work, act like you deserve it. Be on time, be scrupulous with details, and always follow through on what you say you’ll do. Don’t make promises you can’t keep just to look good for the moment. Honesty, sincerity, and commitment still count for a lot.
  2. Know when to ask and when not to. As much as possible, figure out your challenges at work without going to the boss for instruction. At the same time, recognize when you do need guidance and don’t hesitate to ask. The key is to be confident in your abilities and realistic about the areas in which you truly need some assistance.
  3. Step up when no one else does. Look for opportunities to shine in the form of those projects or tasks that everyone seems to avoid. Be the one to take on the necessary, if unpleasant, job that has to be done one way or the other and you’ll soon find yourself invaluable to the team.
  4. Use tact. When you have an idea or opinion to contribute, do so gently. Don’t step on toes or bruise egos in a rush to prove yourself. Let the ideas you offer speak for themselves.
